The need for drivers and further enhancement
The Extensa® DVD drive is using the ‘cdrom.sys’ driver which is integrated in all Windows® 7 installation DVD pack. As this is a fairly simple device one can increase the performance of the DVD drive by a number of ways. Firstly, to ensure consistent high speed reading and writing by the DVD, always use a higher speed media. When buying a media, always look at its’ speed, which will always be prominently displayed on its packing. Buying a lower speed media, irregardless how cheap it is, is waste of money and time. Secondly, go to the device manager and ‘select’ the properties of the DVD drive. Under the advance setting tab, go to transfer mode and change the current selection to ‘DMA’. Now this simple trick will ensure all data transfer resources is allocated to your DVD.
One of the most common DVD related problems in Acer® Extensa® is the ‘disappearing DVD’ syndrome. The device cannot be seen in drop down menus and it is labeled in the Device Manager under Code 10 (device cannot start).
This is caused by registry corruption and it is fairly easy to resolve. However, do not attempt this if you are a novice computer user as any damage to the registry can make your system inoperable. Type ‘regedit’ at the Windows® start search box and select ‘regedit’ from the resulting search list. In the ‘regedit’ window, look for ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE’ and click at the plus sign besides it. A drop down menu will appear. Select ‘SYSTEM’, followed by ‘CurrentControlSet, Control, Class and finally 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318’. Now from the pane on your right find ‘UpperFilters’ and right click on it. Select delete and confirm it. Next find ‘LowerFilters’ and again right click on it. Select delete and confirm it. The problem is resolved.
